AlexYouth News Facebook application, Teen Internet Workshop for Parents scheduled

AlexYouth News Facebook Application

That's right! I just finished building our very own Facebook application that streams all the latest news from the home page of AlexandriaYouth.com straight to your Facebook profile. The purpose is twofold: 1) To help you stay up-to-date by putting the information where you might see it most; 2) Make it easily available to all your friends who view your Facebook profile. What an easy way to reach out to your friends in the community and possibly spark an interest in church.

However, I realize that many of us, myself included, place a high premium on our profile real estate, so if you decide that you'd like to have the info available in Facebook just to you, but not have it take any space on your profile page, that's fine. You can easily remove it from your profile and still keep the "AlexYouth News" link in your mini-sidebar.

Add the AlexYouth News Facebook Application!

Teen Internet Workshop for Parents is scheduled

Many of you have been asking for a seminar on teen hangouts online, such as MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, World of Warcraft, and more. The date is set: Tuesday, November 6, at 7:00 PM in room #114 at church. I'll walk you through an overview of each site, explain how they work, point out possible dangers as well as positive aspects, and give you some tips for how to use these sites to your advantage with your teens. We'll also cover some of the big upcoming sites so you're aware of what's on the horizon for your kids online.

The workshop will be highly interactive and there will be a lot of time for questions. Wi-fi will be available if you'd like to bring a laptop and cruise the sites with me as we explore the online social world together. This workshop is open to the community, so feel free to invite other parents you know who might be interested. Below is the promo video you can pass along:

Burning Bush this Sunday

Burning Bush is this Sunday for grades 7th-12th. It starts at 6:00PM and costs $2/person if you do not bring your Bible, or $1/person if you DO bring your Bible. I'm teaching this week on how to share your faith. It will not be just another guilt trip on why you need to do it because I think most of us already know that, we just need to know what to say and how to say it. So, this Sunday night I'll train you all how to actually talk about it help you gain some confidence in your witnessing.

Ministry needs for both parents and students

Our ministry is going through some growing pains that we're excited to address. In order to keep up with the tremendous growth we're experiencing and to alleviate some of the pressures that come along with it, our model of ministry is shifting to be more team based. In the example of Moses and Jethro, we can scale exponentially with the growth as long as it doesn't all depend on one limited person (i.e. Tim).

We're looking for some people, both students and parents, who are willing to help with some areas of ministry. Please let me know if you're willing to lead or assist someone else in any of these areas:

Events Team: Plan monthly events for both sr. high and jr. high and occasional youth leader parties. Here are some examples.
  • Planet Wisdom student conference
  • Jr. High youth group Christmas party
  • Sr. High youth group Christmas party
  • Youth leader Christmas party
  • New Year’s Eve event
  • 30 Hour Famine
  • Youth leader overnight retreat in April
A parent encouragement/education team: Plan monthly workshops for educating parents in teen issues. For example:
  • Myspace, Facebook and Internet social networks
  • The influence of dating trends
  • What teenage girls/guys need from parents
  • The impact of teenage physical development
  • Understanding teenage sexuality and identity
  • How teenagers handle emotions
  • Understanding teenage intellectual development
  • Teenage social development and the influence of family and friends
  • How to help your teenager develop solid faith foundation
  • How to use culture to your advantage in raising teens
A recruitment/screening team: Work closely with Tim in introducing new leaders to our ministry and to help oversee the screening process for each leader.
  • Help make contact with references
  • Conduct interviews
  • Make opportunities for potential leaders to see the child abuse video
  • Pass along info to Bobbie for background checks
  • Make sure paperwork is complete and filed
Music team: Form a group of musicians to lead the youth group in worship on Sunday nights (Sr. High) and Wednesday nights (Jr. High) on a semi-regular basis.

Welcoming team: Designate students and adults at each youth meeting to look out for newcomers and make them feel accepted and loved. Follow-up during the week and give info to Tim so he can follow-up, too. Look for them the next week.

October ParentLink is available

Our monthly newsletter for parents is available! Download it from our website. This issue will help you, as parents, find ways to help your teens discover their gifts while also showing you how to encourage teens in those gifts. It is our prayer that more and more teens use their gifts to glorify God and grow the kingdom.
