Final call for Planet Wisdom tickets

The discount for Planet Wisdom tickets is over now, but you can still purchase tickets for $60/person. Please contact Ruth Nelson in the church office if you're interested.
  • The dates for the conference are Friday, Nov 30 to Saturday, Dec 1.
  • This conference is for both jr. high and sr. high students.
  • We need many parents and youth leaders to go on the trip with us and help drive. Please contact me ASAP if you're willing to help in this way. Gas money will be reimbursed. We can't go without your help!
  • Students will need to bring a bag-dinner with them to eat on the way there on Friday and extra money for lunch and dinner on Saturday. Saturday's breakfast is provided.
Please make all checks payable to the church. For more information on the conference, visit their website at PlanetWisdom.com.

Teen Internet Workshop video archived online

If you missed the Teen Internet Workshop for Parents this past Tuesday but want to watch the video of the seminar, it's now archived on our youth group website. The video is a little over 2 hours long, so carve out a little bit of time to sit in front of your computer for it. Feel free to pass the video link to other parents you know who could benefit from the seminar, too. (Once you click "Play," give it a minute or two to get the streaming started before it actually starts to play.)

Watch the Teen Internet Workshop video online

Or, if you attend our church and you'd like to have the seminar on DVD, contact me directly.

In the seminar I showed a video of a CNN interview with Anastasia Goodstein, author of Totally Wired: The truth of what teens and tweens are REALLY doing online. I HIGHLY recommend this book for any parents who wants to understand more about the online social world and how teenagers are interacting with it. Get the book on Amazon.com.

Here's a link to watch the video of the CNN interview on our youth group website.

Hey Parents!

Just a reminder that the Teen Internet Workshop for parents is tomorrow evening at 7:00PM. We'll probably end sometime around 9:00PM, depending on questions and discussions that take place. The event is free, so bring other parents along with you who are interested in learning more about online teen hangouts and how they work.

If you want more information about the workshop, an outline for the evening and the issues we'll discuss, check out the post on my blog here. I look forward to seeing you all there!

Teen Internet Workshop for Parents

Many of you have been asking for a seminar on teen hangouts online, such as MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, World of Warcraft, and more. The date is set: Tuesday, November 6, at 7:00 PM in room #114 at church. I'll walk you through an overview of each site, explain how they work, point out possible dangers as well as positive aspects, and give you some tips for how to use these sites to your advantage with your teens. We'll also cover some of the big upcoming sites so you're aware of what's on the horizon for your kids online.

The workshop will be highly interactive and there will be a lot of time for questions. Wi-fi will be available if you'd like to bring a laptop and cruise the sites with me as we explore the online social world together. This workshop is open to the community, so feel free to invite other parents you know who might be interested. Check out the promo video on our website.

AlexYouth News Facebook Application

That's right! I just finished building our very own Facebook application that streams all the latest news from the home page of AlexandriaYouth.com straight to your Facebook profile. The purpose is twofold: 1) To help you stay up-to-date by putting the information where you might see it most; 2) Make it easily available to all your friends who view your Facebook profile. What an easy way to reach out to your friends in the community and possibly spark an interest in church.

However, I realize that many of us, myself included, place a high premium on our profile real estate, so if you decide that you'd like to have the info available in Facebook just to you, but not have it take any space on your profile page, that's fine. You can easily remove it from your profile and still keep the "AlexYouth News" link in your mini-sidebar.
